Is blood pressure different in black people ?
نویسنده
چکیده
Most studies show that blacks have higher blood pressures than whites, and that hypertension-related mortality is significantly greater. Significant pathophysiological differences are present, on the average, between blacks and whites. Blacks tend to have higher blood volume, lower plasma renin activity, and lower kallikrein excretion. While there may be black-white differences of genetic origin affecting the prevalence of hypertension, at least part of blood pressure difference between black and white is probably of environmental origin. If socio-economic differences are taken into account, there is no difference between black and white in compliance. Antihypertensive therapy markedly reduces mortality in blacks as well as whites.

Transepithelial sodium absorption is increased in people of African origin.
Salt-sensitive hypertension is more common and has more severe consequences in urban black populations than in white populations. Increased renal sodium reabsorption through epithelial sodium channels may underlie the development of high blood pressure in black people. Increased sodium channel activity has been detected in subjects with Liddle's syndrome by nasal potential difference measuremen...

To the Editor: In their recent paper titled “Racial Differences in Blood Pressure Response to Calcium Channel Blocker Monotherapy: A Meta-Analysis,” Nguyen et al. reviewed the existing evidence on ethnic differences in efficacy of calcium channel blocker therapy for hypertension.1 The research question was whether black hypertensive people have a differential response to calcium channel blocker...
متن کاملDesigning and Constructing an Optical System to measure Continuous and Cuffless Blood Pressure Using Two Pulse Signals
Introduction Blood pressure (BP) is one of the important vital signs that need to be monitored for personal healthcare. Arterial blood pressure is estimated from pulse transit time (PTT). This study uses two pulse sensors to get PTT. The aim of this study was to construct an optical system and to monitor blood pressure continuously and without cuff in people with different ages. Materials and M...
متن کاملDescriptive Study of Blood Donors' Blood Pressure in the Population of Male Donors in Tehran in 2017-2018
Introduction: Hypertension is one of the most important preventable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This observational study aimed to depict the role of regular blood donation on the systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively) in hypertensive patients in comparison with normotensive people. Methods: This study was performed as a cross-sectional descriptive study ...
متن کاملComparison of the effect of 8 weeks of aerobic and resistance training on lipid profile and blood pressure of inactive obese women with hypertension
Background and Objectives: Lack of physical activity is a worrying condition because it leads to major health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure and various metabolic disorders. Exercise is a lifestyle change suggested to reduce atherogenic markers in adults. Increased physical activity and fitness are clearly associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, but the optimal ...
